A homeless man was attacked and left with a head wound in Romford town centre yesterday morning.

The 52-year old was assaulted in High Street outside Havering Museum at around 10.30am yesterday (Wednesday, March 14).

Police officers were called to the scene by a member of the public who said that a fight was happening outside the museum.

On arrival police found the victim lying on the floor surrounded by members of the public who were providing first aid.

The man had a cut to his head and there was small pool of blood on the floor.

According to a police report the victim stated that he was walking along, when another man gave him ‘verbal’ (abuse) and so he gave him ‘verbal’ back.

He then said the man hit him on the head.

The victim was adamant that he did not know who his attacker was, and that he did not know why he was assaulted.

An independent witness said she was walking along High Street, and heard another male, shouting at the homeless man and when she turned around, she saw the victim on the floor and the suspect kicked him in the body and punched him several times in the head.

The report states that the witness did not see a weapon, and that the suspect then casually walked off towards Market Place.

A police spokeswoman said that the suspect is described as a black man, average build, around six feet tall, wearing a beanie hat, burgundy long sleeve jumper, and carrying a black sports bag with a white logo.
