Two men from Collier Row are set to be sentenced today for their role in a gang which threatened a man with rape and violence before assaulting him.

Ross Bright, 30, of Highfield Road, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap earlier this year.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was at his home in Peterborough on December 18 last year when he heard a knock at the door.

He was greeted by two men, who told him they were police officers and that they wanted to speak to him about a matter in Ilford.

Suspecting something wasn’t right, the man told his wife to call the police and confirm the situation.

On hearing this the two men barged their way into the house, covered the victim’s head with a jumper and bundled him into the back of a Mitsubishi Warrior.

Swiping his mobile phone, the duo told him that he owed them £20,000, before beating him around the head.

The two men who bundled the victim into the Mitsubishi were later identified as being Nigel Collins, 38, of Fremantle Road, Barkingside and Alex Callcut, 31, of Highfield Road, Collier Row.

A third man, who was waiting in the back of the Mitsubishi, was identified as Tyssen Newland, 36, of Treecot Drive in Leigh-on-Sea.

Whilst driving to Dagenham, the victim was assaulted, threatened and made to call members of his family to tell them they needed to pay in order to secure his release.

The group eventually arrived at The Unorthodox Gym, in Rainham Road North, Dagenham, where Bright led the group inside.

The victim was threatened with rape and constantly assaulted.

After continuing to ask for money, the victim was eventually driven to Perth Road, in Gants Hill, where he was pushed out of the vehicle with his head still covered, wearing just shorts, a t-shirt and no shoes.

He immediately sought help by going into a nearby pub.

Following an investigation by Cambridgeshire Police, all four men were charged with conspiracy to kidnap.

Bright and Newland pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, while Collins and Callcut denied the charges against them and went on trial at Cambridge Crown Court.

On Monday, Collins and Callcut were both found guilty and all four men will be sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court tomorrow.

Det Ch Insp Jerry Waite, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “Mobile phone evidence shows the defendants met on December 18 in the afternoon at the Unorthodox Gym before Newland, Collins and Callcut set off to Peterborough.

“This was clearly an organised kidnapping which has had a detrimental effect on not only the victim but also his family.”
