Romford’s new multi-million pound ice rink and leisure centre in the town centre will open two months ahead of schedule, it has been revealed.
The Sapphire Ice and Leisure Centre was originally scheduled to open in April next year, but is now expected to open to residents two months ahead of schedule in February.
Speaking at a meeting of Havering Council’s cabinet on Wednesday night, cabinet member for leisure councillor Melvin Wallace revealed the new opening date, and heralded the borough’s upcoming plans for its leisure facilities as “really good news”.
The multi-storey £25m complex in Western Road is uniquely designed, with the ice rink on the floor above the swimming pool, and is only the third complex of its kind in the UK.
The rink’s structure, which will have capacity for more than 1,200 skaters, was finished in early October, and its ice is due to be installed slab by slab in December.
