More than 100 police officers are gathering in Elm Park in what is believed to be a ‘show of force’ this evening (August 15).
Intrigued bystanders told the Recorder that they spoke to officers at a roundabout, near The Broadway, who told them they were coming together in a show of force following a number of crimes in the area.
One person said that they saw more than 100 officers, five police vans, three bikes and a number of un-marked cars.
A local business owner said: “There was easily more than 100 officers there, I think the Met commissioner was there too.
“It’s a bit much for just a show of force but at least we know that there are officers around.”
Leaflets were also given to passers-by, which said: “We are out in your area carrying out a range of operations all aimed at tackling violent crime.
“This means you will see more police officers as part of our efforts to keep London safe.
“We will be using a range of tactics including stop and search, weapons sweeps, street briefings and high visibility patrols.
“Our aim is simple - to deal firmly and fairly with those who are intent on putting lives at risk by carrying knives or committing violent crimes.
“If you have any questions about what we are doing or want to help us please speak to our officers.
“If you have any information about who is committing crime or violence in your local area then please tell us, in confience, either by calling Crimestoppers on 08000555111 or speak to a police officer.”
East Area CID were unavailable to respond immediately to The Recorder’s request for comment on the operation.
The Metropolitan Police were unable to provide more details as the event is not an incident.
