The mother of an autistic child has created a special jacket for her son with the words “autistic” written on the back.

Yasmin Raymer from Hulse Avenue, Collier Row is trying to raise awareness of her six-year-old son, Samuel’s condition.

She said: “I just want to put it out to people that he is autistic.

“There is not a lot known about autism and there is still a lack of understanding from many people.”

The mother of four, came up with the idea last October after Samuel went missing in a sea life centre during a family holiday in Great Yarmouth.

Luckily Yasmin says that Samuel was found after a short time after the doors of the centre were shut so that he couldn’t get out.

But she says that she was inspired to create the fluorescent jacket so that if Samuel went missing again people would be aware of his condition.

The jacket also contains a contact number.

She said: “Autistic children can’t communicate in the same way as other children so if he goes missing you won’t be able to stop him and ask him where his parents are.

“He does tend to wonder off sometimes and he has got no road sense.”

Samuel was diagnosed with autism when he was just three-years-old.

But Yasmin says that she was aware that something was wrong with Samuel from six months, when he stopped developing at the same rate as his twin sister.

She said: “It was like someone turned off a light bulb, he would bang his head against a wall, scream constantly and we did our research on it and we could just tick off all of his symptoms.”

Yasmin says that people are still unaware of the condition and many believe that Samuel is misbehaving and she is to blame.

Last Friday, she says that she was accused of labelling him by a driver who saw the jacket and then pulled over.

She said: “I am not labelling him, his safety is the most important thing to me.

“Many people still think that he is an unruly child and look at me like I am an unfit parent.”
