Firefighters from six stations including Romford, Hainault and Harold Hill were called to reports of a loft fire at a three storey house in Charlotte Gardens, Collier Row, at 5.15am this morning.

Neighbour Hayley Sargood, 20, of Navarre Gardens, said: “I didn’t know what it was at first so I tried to sleep through it.

“But when I did get up the first thing I saw was the fire – it was really scary.”

The blaze destroyed the roof of the property and damaged parts of the second floor.

Residents in nine adjacent properties were also evacuated as a precaution.

Watch manager Jason Frisby who was at the scene said: “Crews worked hard to bring the fire under control and did an excellent job of preventing it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

“Over the next couple of days we will also be visiting people in the local area to carry out home fire safety visits and to remind them about the importance of fire safety.”

The Brigade was called 0512 and the fire was under control by 0650. Crews from Romford, Chingford, Hainault, Dagenham, Ilford and Barking fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
