Twenty years ago Julie and Terry Stainer set up a weekly club called Care and Share after they began to fear for the welfare of their elderly neighbours.
Last week the pair, both of Collier Row, were rewarded with a certificate and flowers by Romford MP Andrew Rosindell and Cllr Linda Trew, Deputy Mayor of Romford, for their continuing support for the community.
Rev Russell Smart, of The Good Shepherd Church, where the club is run from in Collier Row, also volunteers at Care and Share.
He said: “It started out as a lunch club, now it gives people an opportunity to get out of their homes and meet their friends.”
Many of the guests each week, according to Rev Smart, are women who have lost their husbands.
“It is really important that they have these kinds of things going on. We are pleased people are so positive about Care and Share.”
