SYM Sailing Club (Stubbers Young Mariners) began life as a group for young people, but now prides itself on bringing the fun of sailing to families.

Based at the Stubbers Activity and Adventure Centre, in Ockendon Road, Upminster, the club was founded 33 years ago.

Press officer Barbara Fynn said: “We are a friendly, independent RYA (Royal Yachting Association) club.

“We have members from all age groups who support each other for a fun day of sailing.

“We are unique in offering enough equipment for whole families to come and have a go, with a large selection of dinghies suiting different sailing abilities.”

Young members who live or go to school in Havering are eligible to represent the borough in the London Youth Games.

Competitors from SYM have previously won gold, silver and bronze medals.

The club also takes part in other exciting events.

Barbara said: “The highlight of the 2014 sailing season was taking part in Bart’s Bash, the largest sailing event in the world, where our club helped to break two world records!”
