Entertaining the community for 63 years is no mean feat, but for one Havering group the success just keeps on coming.
The Royal British Legion Band & Corps of Drums Romford is one of the longest-running independent youth bands in Britain, as well as Havering’s oldest band.
Formed in 1952, its headquarters are named Richardson Hall after founder Peter Richardson.
Band director Ian Yeoman said: “The band is made up of boys and girls and has a membership of 75, with the average age being 17 and the minimum age being nine.
“The band provides a great social life and a fantastic opportunity to travel. It is also a great opportunity to work as a team and meet new friends.”
Every year, the band leads the St George’s Day celebrations, the Armed Forces Day parade and the Remembrance Day parade.
New members interested in playing instruments such as drums and flutes are encouraged to join.
It costs £1 a week or £50 a year.
Ian said: “Full training is given, but if you already have an insight into music that is an advantage.
“There are not many hobbies where you can travel all over the country, Europe and further afield for £1 a week!”
