A Havering based charity is trying to raise funds to build a non profit care home in the borough.

Home For Home For The Elderly want to realise their dreams of creating a home built on the basis of love, care and respect rather than money.

Michael Chadwick, the chairman of the charity said: “We want to create a care home where we can provide accomodation for the elderly who do not have the private means and do not have the necessary savings and property.”

The charity was officially set up in March and is now holding a number of fundraising activities to try to buy the land suitable for the building of the home.

The group say that the home would be based on a Christian ethos of love but that the home would be open to anyone regardless of their faith.

The charity want their home to attract the best care workers and they believe that they can make this happen by offering the staff higher wages.

Marie McCaffrey, project manager at the charity said: “We only want to employ staff who really care and are the best.

“In return we want to give our staff higher wages because of a lot of staff who go into the job because they like working with people find that they can’t survive because of the low wages.”

Michael and Marie came up with the idea of creating their own care home last year after the council’s two last remaining care homes, Elmhurst Lodge in Hornchurch and Winnifred Whittingham House in Rainham were closed.

The friends sent letters explaining their ideas to churches within Havering and within a few weeks they had a list of 100 people who had signed up to help them.

The group included nurses and doctors who offered to help train the staff, people who have offered to work in the home and others who have come forward to offer financial support.

Michael said: “The closure of the council run care homes meant that the only alternative for elderly people is private care and for that to happen they have got to have the money, their own property or family to rely on.”

The charity have planned a number of fundraising events to raise money to build the home including a social event on Sunday July 22 at 2.30pm at St Peter’s Mass Centre in Front Lane, Cranham.
