Shoppers were evacuated from a shopping mall earlier today as a blaze took hold in a supermarket car park.

Firefighters were called to Asda at The Mercury Mall, Mercury Gardens, Romford to reports of a fire.

A crew from Romford Fire Station attended the incident.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “There was a car alight in Dolphin Approach, a supermarket’s car park, we believe Asda.

“We were called at 1.32pm and had it under control by 1.45pm.”

There were no reported injuries.

As the blaze took hold shoppers commented on Facebook.

“The car park is pitch black,” said Megan Leigh Hennessey.

“Be careful if you have young children as hard to breathe from smoke.”

Tammy Anderson added: “They went into lock down, my brother was in there when it happened.”

Shoppers were allowed to return to the building once the fire was dealt with by the emergency service.

Ms Hennessey continued: “Lot of coughs going round cause of the smoke but has cleared up a lot.”
