The RSPCA is looking for a new home for a greyhound abandoned in a field after being run over.

Bailey was found with a dislocated leg near Sainsbury’s supermarket in Howard Road, Grays, earlier this month.

The four-year-old dog was unable to walk, panting heavily and had blood on his back legs.

RSPCA animal collection officer Anna Glozier said: “He was clearly suffering when I arrived, the poor little thing – it was heartbreaking.

“I suspect he had been run over the night before and just been left there all night on his own without any treatment or care.

“He was so friendly despite the obvious pain he was in but when I tried to pick him up he just yelped in agony.

“I took him straight to a vet who confirmed his hind leg was badly dislocated and needed urgent surgery to be popped back into place. We urge anyone who knows anything at all to let us know about how poor Bailey came to be dumped in this state to call us on 0300 123 8018.”

Bailey has since made a good recovery.

Teri Langton, clinic manager for the Havering and Harold Hill Branch of the RSPCA which is caring for him, said: “Bailey is a really sweet and gentle boy, who has captured everyone’s heart, and we would love to be able to find him a happy new home where he will be loved and cared for as he deserves.

“We would recommend him to be homed with children eight years and over, and with other dogs but probably not with cats.

“If people are interested in rehoming Bailey, please call us on 01708 381822.”

The RSPCA can rehome dogs like Bailey with your help. For more details go to choices.rspca.org.uk/Appeal/rehome-a-dog
