Businesses in Barking, Dagenham and Romford are being offered free marketing advice.
Syed Naqavi, a marketing course leader at CU London, based at the former Dagenham Civic Centre, wanted his students to get real-life experience working with local businesses.
He approached Alan Levy, who owns Eyewear at Number 8 in Romford, offering him a free marketing plan.
Students have so far conducted a question and answer session with Alan and a visit to his shop. They’re in the process of putting together an action plan which they’ll pitch to the business owner.
Mr Naqavi said: “We are keen to build links with local businesses.
“For a class of future marketing professionals, this is a valuable experience of how to apply what they have been learning to a real world scenario. For Alan, it’ a fantastic opportunity to push his business with the guidance of our students.”
Mr Naqavi now wants other small local businesses to get in touch, so they can be given similar support.
He said: “If anyone running a business is willing to put their trust in the future of the industry, we encourage you to contact us.”
