The brother of a convicted fraudster has labelled him “scum” after his crimes were revisited in a Channel 5 documentary this week.

Brian Relf, 51, of Rush Green, was forced to relive the memories of his older brother Stephen Relf, who was convicted in 2011 of defrauding two companies out of more than £220,000, when he featured in Caught With Their Fingers in the Till on Monday night.

He said: “I think he is scum for what he did. He put so many people out of work just so he could make some money. If he ever showed up at my door, I would not be responsible for my actions.”

Stephen Relf worked as an accountant at Miller & Miller Chemicals in Hainault, where it was later found out he had signed off more than £100,000 from the company, disguising the money as payments to other companies, but actually keeping it for personal use.

It was then discovered that while he was working for transport firm A&J Exhibitions in Thurrock, he had signed off more than £120,000, once again to be used for his own gain.

The money taken was said at the time to have majorly contributed to the closure of the firm which had been running for 20 years, resulting in 55 people being put out of work.

Brian said: “If there was one word to describe him it would be dishonest. He has always been a liar and greedy, even when he was young and he would steal money from my mum.

“She would have been mortified if she was alive and saw what he had been up to.”

Relf was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud by abuse of position.

Brian said: “I want nothing to do with that man ever again. He is a liar and should not be trusted.”
