Frustrated elderly and disabled rail users have been unable to access a station platform for more than three weeks.

Commuters have not been able to get onto platform one at Brentwood station because of an out-of-order lift.

A delay in handing responsibility for repairing the lift from railway owners Network Rail to train operator Abellio Greater Anglia has left commuters stranded.

Engineers were sent out by Abellio to inspect the lift this week after it went out of action on August 5.

Brentwood Bus and Rail Users Association member Richard Enever said: “Disabled people and elderly people are finding it quite difficult to get down the stairs.”

The 65-year-old, of Queens Road, Brentwood, claims the lift has been out of action for more than six weeks leaving him unable to commute into London since.

Mr Enever added: “Nothing has been done. We want it repaired quickly because it’s gone on long enough.

“I could not let my friend with a heart condition use the stairs so we had to go to Shenfield and pay for a cab to get there. It’s a major inconvenience.”

Cllr David Kendall said: “I think there is a huge degree of frustration. We need to get it fixed as soon as possible and commuters should make themselves heard.”

An Abellio Greater Anglia spokesman said: “The responsibility for the lift has recently transferred from Network Rail to ourselves.

“There are outstanding issues with the lift and we are urgently taking steps to resolve these and our engineers are on site now.”
