Brentwood and Ongar MP Eric Pickles says the £10,000 rise in his waist-busting biscuit bill was an admin error.

The Communities and Local Government secretary’s budget for bourbons, digestives and custard creams soared from £30,000 to £40,000 in just a year.

However, Mr Pickles says he’s not being a jammy dodger, and that the dramatic rise was the result of “one of [his] fine civil servants putting the wrong thing in the wrong column”.

Speaking to LBC’s Iain Dale last week, he said: “This is a figure for hospitality, if people come from a long distance we will give them a cup of tea and things.

“We really pushed back and then suddenly the digestives and Kit Kats started to peer back in.

“I even bring in my own tea bags. I won’t accept anything from the public purse.”
