A man was killed last night when his car hit a lamppost in Rainham Road, Hornchurch.

Police were called to the scene, near the junction with Sowrey Avenue, just after 10.30pm to find the victim, believed to be 24, trapped inside the overturned blue Ford Focus.

Fire and ambulance crews also attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course. Police believe they know the man’s identity, but are awaiting formal identification and confirmation next of kin have been informed.

Officers from Havering are investigating the circumstances and are asking witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information, to call Havering CID on 101.

No other vehicle is believed to be involved.

Roads around the area were closed last night and earlier this morning, but have now been re-opened.

It was the second crash in a matter of hours in Hornchurch. Two people were hospitalised following a crash at 11.15am in Upper Rainham Road.
