A homeless dog who spent almost half his life in kennels has finally been given a new start to life thanks to a family from Hornchurch.

The mongrel named Scooby arrived Battersea Dogs Home as a stray in October 2011, and spent 263 days waiting for someone to give him a second chance – almost six times the average stay for dogs.

However, it was the Rayner family, of Chestnut Glen, who felt they could offer Scooby the fresh start he deserved.

Sandra Rayner said: “Scooby is such a lovely dog and he’s settled in so well – it’s like we’ve always had him. He’s so much fun and is great with everyone. We really can’t believe our luck and can’t understand why no-one else wanted him.”

During his time at Battersea, Scooby was put out on the kennel’s foster programme where dogs who are finding kennel life difficult are given one-to-one love and attention in a home environment.

Scooby is now enjoying his new life with the Rayners and can often be found walking in Harrow Lodge Park where he enjoys playing fetch with his tennis balls.
