League Two: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Northampton Town 3

Daggers home season ended with a whimper as a resurgent Northampton Town, fighting for their lives at the bottom of League Two, were home and hosed inside the opening 45 minutes.

A double from 18-year-old Ivan Toney and a fine finish from Ian Morris proved to be enough as Daggers offered very little, with the Cobblers securing their biggest and most important win of the season.

Boss Wayne Burnett rang the changes as he continues to experiment with his side – and brought five in for this clash against the Cobblers, including the lightly-used Afolabi Obafemi, and Jack Connors, playing in front of Femi Ilesanmi down the left hand side.

But from the outset it was clear that the Cobblers, battling to stay in the Football League, wanted it a lot more than the hosts, and were backed in their numbers by a 1,234 strong support.

Just seven minutes had gone when a lovely ball in from Morris found the 18-year-old youth product Toney who directed a fine header past home goalkeeper Jordan Seabright.

The hosts barely had time to recover from that when they conceded a second four minutes later.

The Cobblers had forced a corner and the clearance fell straight to Morris – a scorer in the 2-2 draw at Sixfields earlier in the season - who looped a fine effort over Seabright and into the net.

Daggers did come into the game ever so slightly, but the damage had been done, and unlike the Portsmouth game, there was no fortunate reply from the hosts.

Luke Norris – who had spent a spell on loan at Northampton earlier in the season – saw a header well tipped over the bar by Matt Duke.

However the game was effectively put to bed five minutes before the end of the first half with another clinical finish from the impressive Toney.

A corner in from Darren Carter caused confusion between Seabright and centre half Brian Saah, and Toney’s attempted a bicycle kick flew into the back of the net.

Saah thought he had reduced the arrears two minutes later, but his back post tap in was ruled out for offside.

Sean Shields came on at the break for the Daggers, but that did little to liven the game up, and there was no sign of revival from the hosts.

Northampton also had a goal ruled out for offside, and it was in fact the visitors who looked the most likely to score when Seabright got down well to push Chris Hackett’s curling free-kick behind for a corner.

Matt Duke spent much of the second half as a spectator, and as the game wore on, it had a feel of pre-season about it.

The match ended on a sour note for the hosts though with Norris stretchered off after going in for a challenge with Carter, and after the Cobbler got the ball, he unintentionally caught the Brentford loanee.

And that was how it ended and though it may well have been a disappointing end to the season at Victoria Road, the Daggers would rather be in their position, than the one of today’s visitors.
