Four Essex villages have been picked out by an estate agent for combining “countryside living and convenient connections” into London.
According to Beresfords, the rise of hybrid working has changed what home buyers expect from locations - with many looking for villages where they can enjoy a lifestyle outside of working hours, while still being able to reach London quickly for work.
Addressing this demand, Beresfords has identified four Essex villages that offer the best of "countryside living and convenient connections into the capital".
Ingatestone

Former civil parish Ingatestone remains "one of Essex’s most desirable locations for London commuters", according to Beresfords.
The village combines an "attractive village centre with excellent transport links".
Its own railway station provides direct services to London Liverpool Street in around 30 to 35 minutes, which Beresfords said makes it attractive to those who still commute into the capital regularly.
Ingatestone offers a "popular high street" and a range of restaurants and pubs including The Star Inn - dating from around 1480 - and The Bell, which also traces back five centuries according to its website.
A Beresfords spokesperson said: "For buyers who want the convenience of being able to reach London without giving up traditional village character, Ingatestone is a great choice."
Writtle

Located just outside Chelmsford, Writtle offers a different proposition to Ingatestone, according to Beresfords.
The village does not have its own railway link, but Chelmsford station is a short drive away, with trains reaching London Liverpool Street in around 32 to 35 minutes.
Despite the lack of direct rail access, the lifestyle benefits are in "abundance" including a traditional village green, independent cafés, pubs, community events and surrounding countryside providing a "genuine village feel".
One of Writtle's main attractions is the Writtle Festival - a summer event held at Old Chelmsfordians Sports Club, containing performances from bands and soloists across three stages.
"Its combination of character and convenience makes Writtle appealing to families and London buyers looking to make the move out of the capital," Beresfords concluded.
Stock

Stock is another "highly sought-after Essex village", listed by Beresfords who claim it is "particularly popular with buyers looking for an attractive rural setting without being too far from London".
Billericay station is a short drive away, with direct services to London Liverpool Street taking around 30 to 35 minutes.
Stock offers an "established village centre, attractive homes, countryside walks and a strong food and hospitality scene".
In September 2025, Stock was named as one of the best places to live in the county as part of the Muddy Stilettos Top 300 Places to Live series.
The lifestyle magazine cited restaurants, pubs, shops and walking routes such as Swan Wood and Lake Meadows Park as reasons for Stock's inclusion on the list.
Fryerning

"For buyers at the premium end of the market, Fryerning offers a more secluded rural lifestyle," according to Beresfords.
The village and former civil parish is known for "substantial homes, attractive countryside and a sense of privacy", with property values "reflecting its position as one of the area's more prestigious addresses".
Ingatestone station is located nearby, providing direct services to London Liverpool Street in roughly 30 minutes.
Fryerning has a duo of pubs in The Cricketers and The Viper, which was named best bar of the year 2026 in the Essex Life Food and Drink Awards 2026 according to its website.
A Beresfords spokesperson concluded that Fryerning demonstrates how the definition of a commuter village has evolved - for some buyers, being able to walk to the station is no longer essential if a short drive is possible to access a fast London connection.
