A toy shop owner from Romford has raised money to support recovery efforts following devastating floods at the Nepal-Tibet border.

Alan King, owner of KC Toys at Romford Shopping Hall, has been donating 10 per cent of all his sales to help residents in Nepal after the huge flash floods and landslides there on August 26.

Around 1,400 people died in the disaster, while more than 6,000 are still missing in Nepal a month later, according to official data.

Alan, whose wife Meera is from Nepal, said he believes anything that people can do "will help".

He told the Recorder: "We decided to collect money for them [Nepalese flood victims] and anything we raise, we will take and send over there.

"It helps, anything helps.

"I've already collected around £200.

"If I can get £500 I'll be over the moon.

"It's genuinely something close to my heart."

Meera's family still lives in Nepal, and Alan said his father-in-law left the country to visit friends and family in Australia only two days before the deadly floods.

He was initially only going to fundraise for a week, but has been collecting money for three weeks now and is "still going".

As well as the 10 per cent of all sales being donated, Alan also has a collection tin at his shop for any extra donations customers wish to make.

He said: "I'll keep it going as long as I can.

"I want to collect what we can.

"Even if we had 100 people donate a pound that's £100."
