A 53-year-old man has been charged with arson after fires were started at a park in Romford.

Police received reports of a man deliberately setting fire to fields within Cotton Park on Friday (August 14).

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had already left, however they were able to find him shortly after following an area search.

A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and later charged, and remanded to attend court.

In a statement, Havering Police said: "On Friday 14 August, police received reports of a man deliberately setting fire to fields within Cottons Park, Romford.

"The suspect left, prior to police arrival, and officers conducted an area search, where he was located shortly after.

"A 53 year old man was arrested on suspicion of arson.

"He was later charged and remanded to attend court."
