A woman said she is "elated" that a nearby hotel had its outdoor events license stripped after causing the last few years to be "exceptionally painful".

Havering Council took action against Berwick Manor Hotel following a formal request from public protection officer George Pater, who described a “persistent and unacceptable nuisance to local residents” dating back to 2021.

A licensing sub-committee meeting was held on August 6, and it was decided that the hotel's license to host outdoor activities would be removed as well as its designated premises officer (DPS) being removed from the site.

Natalie Crisp's home is separated from the hotel by a field.

Speaking to the Recorder after last Thursday's meeting, she said: “As residents we’re elated to be fair because it will remove that element of anti-social behaviour from the area.

“I don’t want to see a business go down and the hotel itself is not our issue.

“It’s the events that they have at weekends which is the issue."

Natalie said herself and fellow residents including James Eaton who too attended the licensing meeting, had hoped for an alteration to the outdoor events license but "weren't expecting" the removal of the DPS.

"We are bombarded with music from 3pm usually on a Saturday and the music can finish anywhere between 11pm and 1am," she said.

“They’ve [the hotel] decided to take all of the festivals out into the garden area where there is massive staging – like Glastonbury.

“The music goes on through huge speakers and bellows across the countryside and the fields and it’s basically like having their festivals in our gardens.

“The last few years have been exceptionally painful."

The sub-committee meeting was chaired by councillor Christine Vickery and attended by councillors Kevin Ayres and Geoff Starns and public protection officers George Pater, Paul Jones and Oisin Daily.

Mr Pater said the council had tried to resolve the issue by introducing a noise management plan and sound limiter in November 2021.

He said officers found the equipment was not being used when checked in August 2025.

A noise abatement notice was served on September 10, 2025, but the problems continued.

Natalie added: “I’ve been at work all week and the last thing I want to do is be bombarded by screaming, MCs who are swearing and shouting sexual innuendos over the microphone or encouraging the attendees to scream at the top of their voices.

“It’s also not pleasant when you want to go to bed on a Sunday night because you’ve got to get up early on Monday and you can’t have your window open in this heat because the music is in your bedroom.

“I love to listen to music, I love to party, I’m not adverse to having a good time.

“However, this is week in, week out through the summer.

“We don’t want to live with that every weekend."

After listening to James and Natalie's representations at the meeting, legal adviser Umair Malik confirmed the decision had been made to impose a condition that would "stop any licensable activity in the outside area of the premises".

He said: “The licensing sub-committee has also decided to take one further step to remove the DPS from the premises license.

“What that really means is the DPS is an individual who is the main person on a premises license and who has a legal responsibility of the day to day running of the business."

According to a copy of the hotel's license, visible on the council's website, Pareshkumar Arvindbhai Patel is the DPS.

Mr Malik added: “The consequences of removing the DPS is that until the premises license holder finds a DPS of an acceptable standard, the premises will not be allowed to sell alcohol.

The Recorder has previously contacted the hotel for comment but has not received a response.
