A hotel in Rainham which plays music so loud it leaves nearby homes "vibrating" has been told it can no longer host outside events.

The decision relates to Berwick Manor Hotel in Berwick Pond Road, which has lost its license to host activities outside.

The hotel's designated premises officer (DPS) was also removed from the site, meaning the hotel won't be able to sell alcohol until they are fully replaced.

This comes after a formal request from public protection officer George Pater, who said the hotel’s events had caused a “persistent and unacceptable nuisance to local residents” dating back to 2021.

After an initial Havering Council licensing sub-committee meeting on July 15 was adjourned due to the absence of a representative from the hotel on the day, a new meeting was held last Thursday (August 6).

For the second time, no hotel representative turned up last Thursday.

The meeting was chaired by Councillor Christine Vickery and those in attendance included councillors Kevin Ayres and Geoff Starns, public protection officers George Pater, Paul Jones and Oisin Daily and legal adviser Umair Malik.

Local residents James Eaton and Natalie Crisp also attended, as they did at the meeting on July 15.

James previously described the toll the noise and anti-social behaviour has taken on his family.

He said: "I don’t want to walk out in my garden and hear rude words all the time, I don’t want to hear fireworks after 11 o’clock.

"I’ve got kids at home and I’m worried to put my kids outside when there’s an event on.

"Every weekend we go out to get away from the events now."

Speaking at the latest meeting, James added that the music has over time got “louder and louder and louder" to the point where his house was "vibrating".

He added: "My daughter’s bedroom windows were vibrating.

“The people that come to the events there aren’t the people we need in the area.

“I’m done – there’s nothing else we can do. It can’t carry on."

Neighbour Natalie Crisp also raised similar concerns.

“We sit in our garden and we can hear every word that the MC is screaming out," she said.

“They’re swearing, shouting sexual innuendos."

Natalie said both the management team at the hotel and the punters who attend the outdoor events "just have this complete lack of consideration for the residents".

Mr Pater explained that the council had tried to address the problems by introducing a noise management plan and sound limiter in November 2021, but officers found the equipment was not being used in August 2025.

A noise abatement notice was served on September 10, 2025, yet the issues continued.

After listening to James and Natalie's representations, legal adviser Mr Malik confirmed the decision had been made to impose a condition that would "stop any licensable activity in the outside area of the premises".

He said: “The licensing sub-committee has also decided to take one further step to remove the DPS from the premises license.

“What that really means is the DPS is an individual who is the main person on a premises license and who has a legal responsibility of the day to day running of the business."

According to a copy of the hotel's license, visible on the council's website, Pareshkumar Arvindbhai Patel is the DPS.

Mr Malik added: “The consequences of removing the DPS is that until the premises license holder finds a DPS of an acceptable standard, the premises will not be allowed to sell alcohol.

“The reason for this is the DPS had failed to adequately deal with the issues of noise but also, there was a lack of engagement with the responsible authorities during the review process that also includes him not attending today.

The Recorder has previously contacted the hotel for comment but has not received a response.
