A fundraiser has been launched after a fire tore through the gardens of Harold Hill homes in a "devastating" and "terrifying" experience for a family.

The fire, which started from an unknown source, broke out shortly after 6pm last Wednesday (July 29) and destroyed the garden of Terry Richards' family home.

It led to the loss of gardening tools, children's bikes, a paddling pool and other belongings.

Shortly after the fire, Terry spoke to the Recorder and recounted how he was on his way to a car show in Battlesbridge at the time of the incident but his wife, Kerri and three children aged 12, 14 and 16 were at home.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In the days following the blaze, a GoFundMe has been set up by Kerri and her sister Emily Raymond.

It has currently raised over £760 towards its £1,000 goal.

The GoFundMe description read: "Two days ago, a fire from an unknown source spread into the garden while my sister was in the house with her children.

"It was a terrifying experience for the whole family.

"It's been devastating, especially with the school holidays now ruined for the kids."

It said that around £5,000 worth of damage was done.

The description added: "Thankfully, our home itself is intact, though some windows have melted and had to be boarded up.

"But the damage to the garden has been huge, and they are still shaken by how close it came.

"Their family dog can't use the garden or be at home at the moment, so she's staying with our parents until things are safe again."

Leader of Havering Council, Cllr Keith Prince has confirmed that work is underway to repair the home due to it being a council-owned property.

Because the garden was landscaped by Terry himself, the council will not assist with the garden repairs.

The funds raised will go towards rebuilding the garden and allowing the dog to return home.

"Anything you can give would make a real difference," the description added.

"Any amount helps, and we're so grateful for anyone who can support us during this incredibly difficult time."
