Photos have captured water flooding across a major road near Gallows Corner after a burst water pipe nearby.

Drone images taken by photographer Peter Barrett on Saturday (August 1) show a large section of the westbound carriageway of A12 Colchester Road, Romford, covered with water.

A car can be seen driving through the water close to the junction with Whitelands Way and opposite B&Q Romford.

Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) confirmed that its teams are on site responding to a burst water main and will begin repairs "as soon as it is safe to do so".

A spokesperson for ESW told the Recorder: "Our teams are on site assessing the damage and will begin repairs as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Following a prolonged period of hot, dry weather, the ground can dry out and shift, putting additional pressure on pipework.

"This can loosen joints and fittings and, in some cases, cause pipes to crack.

"We’ve mobilised additional teams across our network to respond to incidents and repair leaks as quickly as possible.

"We would like to thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The water company added that it is "working closely" with the traffic management team at Gallows Corner to ensure the area can be set up safely for repairs.

Colchester Road remains partially closed due to the ongoing Gallows Corner works, with no access from A12 Colchester Road onto the roundabout.

The burst water main comes a day after ESW announced a hosepipe ban for all residential customers in its areas, including Havering and Brentwood.

The restrictions will be introduced at 12.01am on Monday (August 3) and aim to "make sure we have enough water to continue supplying our customers and protect the environment if dry weather continues through the autumn and winter", ESW said.
