Two hectares of grass was damaged after a fire at Harrow Lodge Park.

Firefighters were called to Harrow Lodge Park, near Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre, yesterday (July 29) at 4.59pm, following reports of a fire on the grass.

Around two hectares of grass was damaged, the London Fire Brigade said.

The Brigade took the first of 19 calls just before 5pm, and the blaze was eventually under control by 5.49pm.

Images today (July 30) show the extent of the damage, with a large section of grass blackened.

The aftermath shows extremely dry grass around the edge of the grassland that was alight.

It follows after a series of fires in Havering.

Firefighters responded to two separate grass fires in Romford, another in Rainham and Hornchurch, along with a van on fire in Hornchurch.

One included grassland alight near Southern Way, another on Eastern Avenue, and a Rainham grass incident near Acer Avenue.

A van was also recorded burning on the A127 near Ardleigh Green Road in Hornchurch just before 8pm yesterday.

The Recorder has heard reports of fires in Brentwood and elsewhere in the Havering area, however we’re working to establish further details.

The London Fire Brigade has said that all fires are still being investigated.

It has also said that it experienced its “busiest 24-hour period of 2026” yesterday, with more than 1,300 emergency calls.

Firefighters attended more than 500 incidents, 218 of which were about grass fires.

Crews attended 63 separate grass fires alone in London in just 24 hours

It said Havering recorded the highest number of grass fires, with 47 incidents.

Leader of Havering Council, Cllr Keith Prince, added: “We are working closely with the London Fire Brigade, the Metropolitan Police and other partners to establish the cause of these fires.

“Should any of these incidents prove to have been started deliberately, we will support every effort to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.”
