Which east London borough had the most crime so far in 2026?

The figures, from the Met's public tableau, shows the number of reported criminal offences in each borough as well as the most recurring offence types from January to June 2026.

Across the six east London boroughs, 83,789 criminal reports were made in the first six months of this year.

This was up by 2.5 per cent from the 81,749 reports made in the same time period last year.

The east London borough with the most reported crime so far this year was Newham with 20,924.

Newham's total was up from the 20,085 reports made from January to June 2025.

The most commonly reported crime in Newham was theft with 6,489 reports made - 31pc of the borough's total.

Violence against the person and vehicle offences were the next most recurring with 5,794 and 2,358 reports made respectively in Newham.

Drug offences (1,232 cases) and possession of weapons (206 cases) were also more frequent here than any other borough.

Tower Hamlets had the next highest total of reported crime in the first six months of the year with 18,650.

Theft was the most reported crime type in Tower Hamlets with 5,721 cases, followed by violence against the person with 5,347 reports and vehicle offences with 1,411.

The borough's total was also up from the same period last year where it registered 17,805 criminal reports.

Tower Hamlets also saw 628 reports of sexual offences - the most in east London.

The third highest total of criminal cases so far this year came in Redbridge with 12,522.

This too was fractionally higher than 2025's total from January to June of 11,999.

In Redbridge, violence against the person was the most reported criminal offence with 4,396 cases, followed by theft with 3,022 and vehicle offences with 1,375.

Closely following Redbridge was Waltham Forest with 11,692 criminal cases reported.

Waltham Forest was the only borough in the east of the capital with a lower total in the first six months of 2026 than in the first six months of the previous year - 12,121.

Violence against the person was also the most regular crime type here with 3,448 reports made whilst 3,036 and 1,243 reports were made of theft and vehicle offences respectively.

With the second lowest crime count so far this year, Barking and Dagenham registered 10,143 reports - which was a marginally smaller total than the 10,084 reports made in the same period last year.

Violence against the person was reported 3,802 times whilst theft was reported 1,704 times and vehicle offences 1,087 times.

With 9,858 reports - the lowest total in east London - was Havering.

This too was slightly greater than the 2025 six-month total of 9,655.

The most recurring crime types remained consistent across the east of the capital with Havering registering 3,212 reports of violence against the person, 2,194 reports of theft and 1,213 vehicle offences.
