Search the Public Notice PortalHundreds of residents have signed a petition calling on Havering Council to delay a decision on plans for a new artificial football pitch at a Hornchurch school.
The petition, which now has 590 signatures, is urging the council's planning committee to defer a decision on The Campion School’s application for a floodlit 3G sports pitch.
Campaigners say the proposals need further independent assessments to evaluate the wider impact of the development.
Jennifer MacLellan, a resident of Platford Green and the campaign spokesperson, said: "This petition is not about being against sport.
"Local residents recognise the value of good sports facilities for young people and the winder community.
"However, before such a significant development is approved so very close to people's homes, we believe the planning committee should have the benefit of comprehensive, independent assessments so that any decision is based on the fullest possible understanding of its cumulative impact."
The petition, which will be submitted to the council ahead of the planning committee’s decision, has been signed in person by residents, which Ms MacLellan says demonstrates the depth of concern from neighbours.
It follows a public meeting organised by the school to discuss the proposal, which many attendees felt failed to address key questions about the potential impact on neighbouring homes and the environment.
Residents say the petition is not asking for the scheme to be rejected outright but is instead requesting more thorough and independent scrutiny before a decision is made.
Concerns about the proposal - which also includes a new car park on the school grounds next to Basi Close and Platford Green - include light and sound pollution and environmental harm, particularly in relation to Platford Swan pond.
The Campion School said it has been engaging with the Essex FA, Football Foundation and local clubs, and believes the facility would offer broader benefits.

Paul Larner, the school’s headteacher, previously told the Recorder: "This area has been highlighted by Essex FA as an area in need of this type of facility to enhance provision locally.
"Two local clubs will be the main hirers to ensure that the community benefits.
"We are hopeful that the plans will be passed as this facility will be an important development in sporting provision at the school and will also be a significant benefit for the local community clubs that will use it."
A decision on the planning application is expected by August 27.
