A sixth-form student has been named one of the UK’s top young speakers after winning the Bronze Award in a national oracy competition.
Laurena Anderson, from The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School in Upminster, was recognised in the Gresham College national oracy competition, which invited lower sixth form students from state schools across the UK to submit a five-minute video presentation in response to one of six academic questions.
Miss Anderson was shortlisted as one of 12 finalists from more than 200 entries and delivered her presentation live at Barnard’s Inn Hall in London on July 1.

Miss Anderson said: "It's amazing. I didn't expect this at all. It is such a privilege to be able to stand in such an old hall and hold a medal up and know that I have a place here."
Her presentation explored the question: "Many theatre critics describe theatrical productions as 'vital'... Are they?", she argued: “I argue that it definitely is. If you can go to your local theatre, go! Go watch a play or go and perform. There is so much that can be done to do with theatre, and it will be so enriching to you."
Miss Anderson received the Bronze Award, along with £500 and £200 for her school.
