There are plenty of restaurants that talk about quality ingredients. At The Aviary in Hornchurch, owner Coli Toci starts his day at 3am to make sure he gets them.
Five times a week, while much of the town is still asleep, he sets out to personally source and select fresh produce for his Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. Rather than relying on wholesalers or third-party buyers, he hand-selects all of the fresh fish, vegetables and other ingredients himself, ensuring only the best reaches customers' plates.

It's a labour of love that reflects the philosophy behind The Aviary: exceptional food begins with exceptional ingredients. "We want to provide an authentic dining experience that is centred on high-quality, fresh produce," says Toci.
That commitment can be seen throughout the menu, where fresh local fish features prominently alongside premium dry-aged grass-fed beef that is used for the restaurant's generously sized steaks. Every single dish is prepared with a focus on flavour and freshness, not shortcuts.

Perhaps surprisingly, this hands-on approach is also one of the reasons The Aviary is able to offer what Toci believes are some of the fairest prices in the area. By sourcing ingredients personally, the restaurant avoids paying third parties to purchase and select produce on its behalf. The savings are then passed directly to customers.
The result is a combination that has become increasingly rare in hospitality: premium ingredients without premium pricing. "We want guests to know they're getting the highest quality dining experience without paying inflated prices," says Toci. "It's important to me that the money we save goes straight back to our customers."

The kitchen is supported by a team of highly skilled chefs, each bringing a great wealth of industry experience and understanding of modern Mediterranean cuisine. Their collective expertise allows The Aviary to maintain consistently high standards across a menu that celebrates fresh flavours, vibrant ingredients and dishes designed to be savoured.
As a family-run business, The Aviary has built its reputation on generous portions, high-quality ingredients and value for money. That approach extends beyond the food; the restaurant's wine list is equally impressive.

Working with a specialist supplier, Toci is a discerning wine enthusiast who is proud to offer diners access to bottles that are difficult to find elsewhere locally, at prices that remain surprisingly accessible.
Toci himself brings significant hospitality pedigree to the business, having previously managed the top floor of The Luxe on Liverpool Street, owned by celebrity chef and MasterChef host John Torode. Yet despite those impressive credentials, The Aviary's focus remains refreshingly simple: fresh ingredients, authentic cooking and genuine hospitality.

Everything is cooked to order, meaning guests may occasionally wait a little longer for their meals. For Toci, however, that's a compromise worth making. "It means your food is being freshly prepared there and then," he says. "Nothing is rushed."
Among his own favourite dishes are the Whole Lemon Sole and the Halibut, both showcasing the quality of the restaurant's carefully sourced fresh seafood.

More recently, The Aviary has expanded its offering with the introduction of traditional handcrafted pizzas. Prepared using fresh dough made in-house every day and cooked in the restaurant's new pizza oven, the Rustica-style pizzas are topped with carefully selected ingredients and finished with family-sourced extra virgin olive oil in a celebration of simplicity, quality and flavour.
To mark the launch, guests can currently enjoy any pizza from the new range with a glass of house wine or a pint of draft beer for £19.95, with the introductory offer running until August 13.

The restaurant's dedication to quality and customer experience has earned widespread recognition. The Aviary currently holds five stars on Tripadvisor, 4.8 stars on Google Reviews, 9.3 on TheFork and 4.94 on Dish Cult. It is also ranked the number one restaurant out of 100 in Hornchurch on Tripadvisor and has received the platform's Travellers' Choice 2025 award.
For Toci, though, success isn't measured solely by awards; supporting the local community is equally important. The restaurant offers 15 per cent off pre-show meals, helping theatre-goers enjoy a complete evening out while supporting the area's arts scene.

In keeping with its focus on value, The Aviary also provides three private rooms that can be reserved for events with no room hire charge and no minimum spend requirement. Whether celebrating a birthday, family gathering or special occasion, the team works closely with guests to create personalised experiences, even decorating tables and collaborating on bespoke themes and ideas.
From the chefs carefully preparing dishes to order, to the owner personally selecting produce before dawn, every element of The Aviary reflects a genuine passion for hospitality. In an industry often driven by convenience, The Aviary is choosing a different path, one built on authenticity, craftsmanship and quality. For diners, that means fresh ingredients, generous portions, excellent value and the reassurance that every meal has been created with care.

There are some restaurants you visit for the food. Others you visit for the atmosphere. Then there are those rare places that seem to get everything just right, creating an experience that lingers long after the last plate has been cleared.
Judging by the growing following The Aviary has developed, it seems many diners have already discovered what makes it so special. The only question is when you'll plan your visit.
