The owner of a Romford restaurant named the best across south and east London said he is filled with "immense pride and heartfelt gratitude".

Mangal Meze in South Street took home the title of best Turkish restaurant in south and east London at this year’s Turkish Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (TURTA).

The ceremony, now in its fourth year, took place at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in Hyde Park across June 21 and 22 and saw Mangal Meze up against 10 other finalists.

The winners were decided by a public vote.

Remzi Erdogan, owner of Mangal Meze, said the announcement filled him with "immense pride and heartfelt gratitude".

He said it was a result of team effort and a tribute to the support of the Romford community over the past decade.

“It was fantastic," he told the Recorder.

“The customers who have supported us for the past 10 years voted for us and it was a very, very nice feeling being on stage.

"We were not surprised [to win] because so many customers had told us they voted for us but we didn’t know we would be number one."

He also praised his "incredible team" including "talented" chefs and "dedicated" waiters.

"Their passion, commitment, and hard work are the true ingredients behind this achievement," he said.

"Without them, none of this would have been possible."

Only a few days before the awards ceremony, Mangal Meze celebrated its 10-year anniversary on June 17.

Remzi attributes both the longevity of his restaurant and the recent award win to the quality of his food as well as the connection he has built with the local community.

“Food wise, we think we’re doing the best but we are really attached to our community in Romford and our customers.

“I think the communication and the close feeling is what brought us this award.

“It has motivated me and every single staff member.

“We have worked hard and we deserve this and we will continue to go for more and more."

Describing the moment he received the award as "unforgettable," Remzi insisted that the award is just as much for the customers as it is for him and his team.

He added: "This is a celebration of everyone who has been part of our journey.

"From the day we opened our doors, our mission has always been simple - to bring authentic Turkish flavours, genuine hospitality, and exceptional service to every single guest who walks through our doors.

"This award tells us that we are on the right path.

"Winning this award does not mean we have reached the finish line.

"Instead, it inspires us to work even harder, to continue improving, and to give every guest the unforgettable dining experience they deserve."
