A "caring" secondary school in Romford where "difference is celebrated" has been praised by Ofsted.

St Edward’s Church of England Academy, in London Road, earned two "strong standard" grades in its latest Ofsted report for attendance and behaviour, and personal development and wellbeing.

Under the education watchdog’s new inspection framework, this means leaders at the school are working above the standard expected of them.

The report published on June 22 highlighted the school’s "caring" environment and "diverse community", which pupils "show pride in".

Inspectors said: "Pupils are proud of their school and speak positively about the sense of community it creates.

"They show high levels of respect for staff and for each other and conduct themselves with courtesy throughout the day.

"Pupils report that incidents of discrimination or bullying are rare and that staff deal with them effectively."

Personal development was noted to be a particularly strong area, with the school providing opportunities for pupils to "broaden their cultural and spiritual experiences", such as Bible study group, annual museum trips and historical debates.

Inspectors also found that "difference is celebrated" at St Edward's through events like Black History Month and a scheme where pupils mark their cultural heritage on a large world map when they join the school.

Attendance remains above the national average, the report said, and leaders interrogate data "rigorously" to identify pupils who need targeted intervention.

Jodie Hassan, executive headteacher of St Edward’s Academy, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the feedback from the Ofsted inspectors, which reflects the hard work, dedication and passion of our entire school community.

"At St Edward’s Academy, we strive to provide an education that empowers our young people to achieve their full potential while shaping them into respectful, confident and articulate individuals.

"We look forward to building on this success and continuing to deliver an exceptional education for families across Romford."
