A charity based in Rush Green is aiming to raise more than £400,000 by September to kick off a major redevelopment project.

YMCA Thames Gateway Group has launched a Crowdfunder to secure £408,000, which will allow construction to begin on the £25.6 million refurbishment of its site in Rush Green Road.

The project involves building a new six-storey building, consisting of 184 supported homes and upgraded community facilities, as well as upgrading its existing 11-storey housing block and fitness facilities.

Brian Cooke, director of housing and property for the charity, said: "We see every day the difference a safe place to live can make.

"Young people come to us at some of the most difficult points in their lives, and with the right support, they can rebuild their confidence and move forward positively.

"We are ready to begin this transformation in Romford, but we need the community’s support to take this final step.

"This is a real opportunity to create something that will change lives for generations to come."

The current hostel supports more than 150 young people daily, but the charity says the ageing 1960s building no longer meets standards for supported housing.

YMCA Thames Gateway Group has already secured planning permission and additional funding, and says contractors are ready to begin work.

The fundraised money will cover pre-construction costs and trigger the full investment.

A YMCA Thames Gateway Group spokesperson said: "Like many older buildings, our current site is facing increasing challenges.

"This redevelopment is about creating a place that better reflects the care, support, and dignity every young person deserves, while also strengthening our ability to be a positive, inclusive part of the local community.

"This project is already backed by significant investment, but community support is vital to help us unlock the final funding needed to make it happen.

"Every donation brings us one step closer to creating a space where young people can belong, rebuild their lives and thrive, and where the wider community can feel connected to something positive on their doorstep."

Phase two of the plans - which were submitted in November last year - will also allow expanded community programmes, including stroke and cancer rehabilitation and 50+ activity sessions.
