A Romford shopping centre's security team has been named the best in London after it helped to detain a suspect during a police pursuit.

The MAN Commercial Protection team, who patrol The Brewery shopping centre in Romford, also helped respond to two firearms offences.

Their work has earned them the customer service excellence award for London at the British Security Industry Awards.

Iain McCallister, chief executive of MAN Commercial Protection, said: "Our officers go out of their way to keep The Brewery safe, which is noted in every monthly mystery shopper report – meaning the community enjoys visiting the centre."

The team’s quick response during a police chase in June was highlighted.

Security officers identified the chase as it entered the vicinity of the centre.

When the suspect abandoned their vehicle and tried to flee on foot, one officer intercepted and detained the individual, who was safely handed over to police.

Stuart Wilson, centre manager at The Brewery, said: "Our MAN Commercial security team, supported by our excellent in-house managers, are the face of the centre, the lifeblood of its operation and we wouldn’t be able to operate effectively with anyone else. We cannot speak highly enough of them, and they richly deserve their award."

The 13-strong team will now compete for the national customer service title at the British Security Industry Awards, taking place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London this June.
