KSI and Andy Carroll were amongst those who played in a charity football match in Dagenham, raising more than £6,000 for a charity which also operates in Havering.

The Johnny Crewe Cup was held at Victoria Road stadium - formally The Chigwell Construction Stadium - on May 10 in memory of funeral director John Crewe.

Teams from staff and sponsors of West & Coe Funeral Directors and Hornchurch Cricket Club took to the pitch in support of mental health charity Mind Havering, Barking and Dagenham.

West & Coe came out victorious, winning 3-1.

The event drew players including YouTuber and Britain's Got Talent judge KSI, who has now invested in the Daggers.

The club's manager and former England footballer Andy Carroll as well as former Dagenham & Redbridge FC captain Anwar Uddin also took part.

In a message in the matchday programme Jeremy West, chairman of Hornchurch Cricket Club and managing director of West & Coe, said: "The role Mind plays in our community is immense and critical to so many; we are honoured to support their work.

"As chairman of Hornchurch Cricket Club for nearly 25 years and managing director of our family business, West & Coe, seeing these two teams come together for such a worthy cause means a great deal to me.

"I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone at Dagenham & Redbridge F.C. for allowing us to use this fantastic ground and for their unwavering support.

"We are also incredibly grateful to our special guests, KSI, Andy Carroll, and Anwar Uddin for joining us on the pitch today to help make this day unforgettable."

It was announced in March this year that KSI, whose real name is Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, had bought a share in Dagenham & Redbridge FC following a takeover by Happy Fan Group.

“The goal for me is the Premier League," he told this paper in April.

The match and surrounding activities raised a total of £6,113 for Mind Havering, Barking and Dagenham.

West & Coe said the funds would make a real difference, supporting vital mental health services, advice, and support to people in our local community.

John Crewe, who the match was named after, was a long-serving member of the West & Coe team.

Mr Crewe, who died in February 2023 following a short illness, was featured in the matchday programme as a “true legend within the funeral profession, a unique character whose infectious personality warmed the hearts of everyone he met".

He was also remembered for his love of football and for managing the West & Coe FC team.
