A former councillor has been remanded in custody.

Jeffrey Tucker, 66, who represented the Rainham and Wennington ward on Havering Council, faces charges of alleged historical child sexual offences.

He is accused of raping, indecently assaulting and attempting to indecently assault one of the girls, with the other accusing him of four counts of indecent assault.

He is due to stand trial in January 2027 and has indicated he intends to plead not guilty to all charges.

Dating from 1987 and 1994, the alleged offences relate to two girls who were children at the time.

At Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, Judge Gerard Pounder ruled that Mr Tucker should remain in custody until his trial next January.

The judge’s decision to remand him follows a previous first court appearance at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court last month.

Mr Tucker served as a councillor for 20 years, first elected in 2002 and stepping down in 2022.

He was part of the Independent Residents Group and led it during his time on the council.

Outside of politics, he owns Rainham Goldmine Jewellers in Upminster.

Mr Tucker was not present in court on Monday during the judge’s ruling.

He has not yet formally entered pleas.
