More than 90 per cent of children due to start school in Havering have been offered their first preference of primary school.

Figures released on Primary School Offer Day, which fell this year on April 16, show a slight rise from last year, with more than 90 per cent of children in the borough securing their top choice, compared to 89.1 per cent last year.

A total of 3,121 applications were processed this year, down from 3,212 last year.

Of the children starting in September, 132 from Havering were offered places at infant or primary schools outside the borough, with 118 of those securing their first preference.

Tara Geere, director of starting well at Havering Council, said: "Primary School Offer Day is both an exciting and anxious day for many parents and families so we are pleased that we have improved our performance. With more than 90 per cent of children being offered their first choice of school, our admissions team has done an exceptional job to support children and families.

"I want to acknowledge the dedication of the schools admissions team and thank them for efficiently handling the many applications and queries and for getting the applications sorted on time."
