A planning application - drawn up by Studio Kyson on behalf of Tim Ridgen - has been submitted to construct a new events building at the former Durham Arms pub, in Brentwood Road.
The new single-storey outbuilding is proposed to sit at the back of the beer garden, behind an existing office space and bin store.
While a tree will have to be removed to make way for the building, a green roof is planned to help it "integrate into its surroundings", according to the planning documents.
The documents also state that the scheme aims to support the "continued operation of a community facility", alongside delivering "meaningful ecological enhancements".
In the design and access statement, Studio Kyson said: "The proposal seeks planning permission for the erection of a new single-storey outbuilding within the grounds of the Durham Public House, to be used as a small-scale event space ancillary to the main pub use.
"The development is intended to enhance the functionality and long-term viability of the public house as a community facility."
The statement adds that "deterioration has occurred" at the pub after a "prolonged vacancy", which increases "the importance of bringing the property back into sustainable use".
The Durham Arms, which closed in 2019, was previously hit with two planning enforcement notices last year after the first floor was allegedly turned into a house in multiple occupation (HMO) and a flat without planning permission.
A retrospective application to create a five-person HMO above the pub was later refused after concerns about "insufficient" living space.
Gastropub Ayra has since opened at the premises, but it is not clear if this application is connected with the new business.
The Recorder has contacted Ayra for comment.
