A "lively" and "charming" city only half an hour from Romford has been named as one of the best places to live in the east of England for the second year running.

Chelmsford - the first Essex town to gain city status - has been recognised as one of the best places to live in the east of the country in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

Located only 30 minutes away from Romford, the city secured a spot on the list for the second year in a row, following its regional win in 2025.

Visit Essex calls Chelmsford "vibrant" with attractions and activities "to suit all interests", from historical sites like Chelmsford Cathedral to shopping and country parks.

For heritage days out, it recommends a trip to Hylands Estate - the Grade II* listed country park featuring a neo-classical Georgian mansion - while families up for a challenge can try Go Ape Chelmsford or Ninja Warrior UK.

Shopaholics will find the city a "dream", Visit Essex says, due to the three "fantastic" shopping centres, boutique stores, and a regular market.

According to Zoopla, those looking to move to the area will find the city to be a "lively hub of amenities", but will also discover "a balanced way of life that combines rural charm and city dynamism".

Zoopla said: "The city boasts a range of residences to suit every lifestyle, from the charming historic houses of Old Moulsham to the urban atmosphere and modern flats in the bustling city centre.

"With high-achieving schools and a perception of safety, Chelmsford is a community of both comfort and progression."

Both visitors and residents can also make the most of the city's "excellent" transport links, including a quick 35-minute train ride to central London, Zoopla adds.

Average property prices in Chelmsford at the moment are £225,000 for a flat or £475,000 for a semi-detached house.

For the Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, judges assessed factors including schools, transport, green spaces and the health of the high street.

Helen Davies, editorial projects director and Best Places to Live editor at the Sunday Times, said: "Our expert team of judges visit every location on the list and talk to the locals to find out what they love about the place they live.

"These judges have travelled the length and breadth of the UK, from the Scottish Highlands to the Cornish coast, selecting the top towns and villages, suburbs and cities for the 2026 guide.

"One thing all our chosen locations have in common is that the people who live in them are proud to call them home."
