South Weald, in the borough of Brentwood, is located about 1.5 miles from Brentwood town centre and only a 30-minute drive away from Romford town centre.
It is also a stop on the 498 bus which begins and ends its journeys at Queen's Hospital and Brentwood High Street.
The name 'Weald' comes from Anglian Old English and means a forest, particularly one on higher ground.
The 'South' part of the name distinguishes the village from North Weald, about eight miles to the north-west.

Area experts Area Hive describe South Weald as a "quaint little village that feels both timeless and modern nestled just outside the main hustle and bustle of Brentwood".
In an evaluation of whether South Weald is a good place to live, Area Hive picks out the village's green spaces as a particular point of attraction.
South Weald sits on the end of Weald Country Park, a 530-plus acre park which originated as a medieval deer park during the 12th century.
Explore Essex describes the views here as "spectacular" and ranging from woodland, lakes, meadows, sculpture parks and even a deer park.
Wildlife includes fallow deer, cattle, herons, mallard ducks and other water birds and visitors can buy deer and duck food from a cafe in the park to feed the animals through chutes at the deer park.
Explore Essex also describes Weald Country Park as a "great place to picnic".
Area Hive also notes Bluebell Pond and Belvedere Field for "more serene walks".
The village itself has no pubs and only one restaurant, although it is a highly rated one.
Contemporary Japanese restaurant Saints at the Tower Arms opposite St Peter's Church in Weald Road has an average Google rating of 4.8 out of five stars.
It describes itself as a "stylish and welcoming high-end boutique" with a menu of a "range of creative dishes made with the finest ingredients, including sushi, Yakitori from the Robata, and seafood".
A short distance outside the village are pubs including The Bull, The Nag's Head and The Thatcher's Arms.
According to OnTheMarket, the average price paid for houses in South Weald is £2,750,000 as of February 2026.
This represents a rise of 5.5 per cent over the last 12 months for houses sold in South Weald.
"The village offers a blend of safety, good schools, and beautiful outdoor spaces," says Area Hive.
"It’s not the cheapest place, but the quality of life makes up for the cost.
"However, if you’re looking for a more bustling, urban environment or more affordable housing options, you might want to keep looking."
