Planned engineering work will impact c2c rail services across Essex and London in the new year.

The disruption will take place on the Essex Thameside line over several weekends in January and February 2026, as Network Rail carries out upgrades to improve reliability and passenger experience.

This includes repairs and maintenance at Barking and Rainham stations, as well as Leigh-on-Sea and Grays in Essex.

Simon Milburn, infrastructure director at Network Rail Anglia, said: "These works will deliver a range of vital improvements from station upgrades to infrastructure maintenance, but I know this will cause some disruption for passengers.

"I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we carry out these essential improvements to improve services across Essex Thameside."

The stations set to be directly affected include West Ham, Stratford, Barking and Rainham.

A number of the works will also impact passengers travelling through Upminster.

On the weekends of January 3–4 and February 14–15, rail replacement buses will run between Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness, with train services starting and ending at Fenchurch Street and Leigh-on-Sea.

On January 18, Basildon line services will divert via Rainham and will not call at Upminster, West Horndon, Laindon, or Basildon.

Shuttle buses will run between Upminster and Pitsea via Laindon.

Ockendon line services will operate as shuttles between Upminster and Grays.

Passengers will need to change at either station to continue toward London or Southend.

On January 25, the Basildon line will divert to Fenchurch Street, calling at West Ham but not Stratford.

The Ockendon line will not operate, and rail replacement buses will run between Upminster and Pitsea.

Rainham services will be replaced by buses between Upminster, Rainham, Purfleet, and Grays.

For those heading to Dagenham Dock, tickets will be accepted on bus routes EL2 and 287.

During the weekend of January 31–February 1, services will call at Liverpool Street and Stratford during peak times, with buses running between Upminster and Pitsea.

On February 8, Basildon line trains will divert via Rainham between Upminster and Leigh-on-Sea.

Replacement buses will run from Leigh-on-Sea to Shoeburyness.

On February 22, Basildon line services will divert to Liverpool Street, calling at Stratford but skipping Limehouse and West Ham.

Rail replacement buses and TfL ticket acceptance will be available.

Ockendon lines will operate as shuttles between Upminster and Grays.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and check service updates through National Rail Enquiries or the c2c website.
