A major bank in Brentwood has closed down today due to a decrease in face-to-face visits in recent years.

On January 29 this year, Lloyds Banking Group announced that 61 Halifax branches would be closed including the site in High Street which closed its doors for the final time today (September 10).

The company - which also owns Lloyds and Bank of Scotland - plans to move further towards online banking.

A Halifax spokesperson said: “As many customers now choose to bank through their app or online, visits to our Brentwood branch have fallen over recent years."

The spokesperson confirmed customers now have the option to use branches of any Lloyds branch, such as the Lloyds Brentwood branch on the High Street for their in-person banking, alongside other options such as the Post Office, app, online and telephone banking.

Customers can also pay in cash at PayPoint locations using the app cash deposit feature.

The nearby Post Office at 1-2 Baytree Centre offers personal and business customers everyday banking services, access to cash, paying in of cheques, and more.

They added that the nearest free-to-use ATM is 0.03 miles away and there are 12 free ATMs within a quarter of a mile of the closing branch.

In January, Halifax said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.

"Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, internet banking or calling us instead, which means they are using branches much less.

"Because of this, we'll be closing our Brentwood branch."

Lloyds Banking Group is also shutting 61 Lloyds sites, including the Hornchurch branch - which is set for closure tomorrow (September 11).
