Romford will be getting a Christmas tree this year, despite Havering Council not having any funding for events or decorations.

Julie Frost, director of Romford Business Improvement District (BID), has confirmed that the BID is "happy to provide the tree" for the town centre this year and has made Havering Council aware of this.

Julie also told this paper that there will be another installation in South Street this Christmas - similar to the giant reindeer put up last year - as well as lights at Romford station.

It comes after the council confirmed there will again be no cash for decorations or switch-on events across the borough this Christmas.

A council spokesperson said it will instead support communities to "find sponsorship from our businesses" for festivities.

They added that the council will "look at finding the money to cover the cost of Christmas trees with lights" like it did last year.

The spokesperson told the Recorder: "We have agreed to do all we can to support Christmas in our town centres.

"We will support our local communities, if required, to find sponsorship from our businesses for any events or further lighting in our high streets as we do not have the funding to do this."
