Plans for major refurbishment works at a college campus in Hornchurch have been approved.

Havering Council's planning team has granted New City College planning permission for the extensive redevelopment of its Ardleigh Green site, including the demolition of four teaching blocks.

The approval, received on May 20, came with a series of conditions relating to the materials used, noise during the construction phase and when the works can be carried out.

The planning officer's report reveals that during the consultation phase - which included a public exhibition in November 2024 - 117 neighbours were sent letters about the application.

Only three responded with objections to the proposal, raising concerns about an increase in traffic in the area and noise disturbance during construction works.

The officer argued that the issue of noise is controlled by the approval conditions, and that "there is no parking or highways implication" to the proposed removal of the current main entrance gate.

The report concluded that the refurbishment works "will contribute to the enhancement of the college campus" and create "an attractive and energy efficient building to the benefit of the wider Havering community".

Janet Smith, principal of Ardleigh Green and Havering Sixth Form campuses, called the approval a "significant milestone" in New City College's "ongoing commitment to providing an outstanding learner experience".

Ms Smith added: "The phased refurbishment at our Ardleigh Green campus is being very carefully planned to minimise disruption while maximising improvements to our teaching areas, facilities and student social spaces."

Ardleigh Green is the biggest New City College campus, and four out of its nine buildings will be partially or fully demolished as part of the refurb.

This includes the C block and W block - aiming to open up space at the front of the campus - and the Nursery block.

The Space, at the back of block A, will be demolished, while the remainder of the building will be stripped back to its core and renovated both internally and externally.

The renovations include a new library and learning resource area, as well as improved teaching spaces with 19 classrooms.
