Ardleigh Green Junior School in Ardleigh Green Road submitted a planning application on November 11 2024 for work to be done on its swimming pool.
Andrew Frater, chief operating officer at Empower Learning Academy Trust (ELAT) which runs the school, told the Recorder in December last year that the refurbishment will include "a new roof, new heating system, a full clean and refurbished changing rooms".
On January 20 this year, the application was approved with conditions "to ensure that the development is carried out as approved".
In the decision document, Havering Council stated that the use of the pool "shall be limited to hours between the hours of 8am to 6pm on Mondays to Fridays and shall not be used on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays".
The council also said that development must be constructed with the materials detailed in the application and must not install any machinery unless it meets specific standards to protect "noise sensitive premises".
The pool has been located at the school since the 1950s, but it was closed during the Covid pandemic and has since remained out of use.
The planning application sought to refurbish the pool completely and make it available for year-round use with the addition of a roof.

"With the size of the trust (ELAT) now, we get a decent capital grant from the government which can be used for the pool."
Mr Frater attributed part of the drive behind the plans to ex-headteacher, John Morris OBE.
"One of the things that previous headteacher John Morris was very keen on was ensuring that all kids that went to Ardleigh Green left being able to swim.
“That is difficult when you have to travel the kids out to pools in the borough so we decided to try to reinstate the pool and enhance it with a roof so we can use it all year round.”
