The first pictures from the scene of a major church hall fire have been released and it is now under police investigation.

Billowing smoke from the disused building in St Andrews Road, Romford, can be seen in the photos provided by the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

The church hall, close to St Andrews CoFE Parish Church, suffered a blaze which the LFB was alerted to at 12.30am today (April 11).

Heavy smoke, seen below, resulted in LFB telling people nearby to keep their windows and doors shut.

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters responded to deal with the blaze that damaged the church hall's first two floors and roof.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The fire was under control by 3.01am, more than two-and-a-half hours after the LFB was called.

Crews from Dagenham, Ilford, Hainault and nearby fire stations attended the scene.

The LFB tackled the blaze from above using one of its 32-metre ladders.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the brigade and the Metropolitan Police, LFB said.
