A man has died days after a crash between two cars near a leisure centre in Brentwood.

The man, in his 30s, and a woman - both passengers in a BMW car -  were seriously injured and taken to hospital after the incident in Doddinghurst Road, near the Brentwood Centre, at 7.35pm on February 2.

Essex Police has today said that the man died in hospital eight days later. Specialist officers, the force said, are supporting his family while a probe into the incident is ongoing.

The crash, between a blue BMW 320i and a black Volkswagen Golf, led to the closure of Doddinghurst Road while police investigated and recovered the vehicles. The road has since reopened.

The driver of the BMW- a 36-year-old man from Romford - was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of the crash.

He was also taken to hospital and has since been released under investigation.

The Volkswagen driver was also taken to hospital.
