A blaze in a workshop has destroyed two cars as six fire engines and 25 firefighters scrambled to the scene.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 9.49pm to a fire at a car workshop on Whalebone Lane North in Chadwell Heath yesterday (February 8).

Two cars were destroyed and firefighters had to remove cylinders, some of which combustible, from the premises.

Sub officer Craig Downs, who was at the scene, said LFB officers worked "incredibly hard" to extinguish the blaze, which was under control by 11.37pm.

"On arrival there were flames and heavy smoke coming from the workshop," he said. "It was incredibly hot and we could see an orange glow inside the building.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked incredibly hard to extinguish the fire quickly and successfully prevented the fire spreading to a nearby bungalow and adjacent shops," he added.

Fire crews from Dagenham, Romford, Hainault and Ilford stations attended.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
