A fire on the A12 in east London left some homes without power for more than nine hours.

The blaze on the southbound carriageway was reported to emergency services at 12.05pm on January 20. 

They were forced to block off the road at the junction with Barley Lane in Goodmayes whilst the situation was dealt with. 

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: "Firefighters tackled a fire on Eastern Avenue, IG2 on Saturday.

"An electrical junction box was destroyed by fire. A 25 metre-cordon was put in place as a precaution and the London-bound carriageway was temporarily closed to traffic.

"There were no reports of any injuries. Crews made the scene safe before leaving the scene in the care of the relevant power network company."

Firefighters had safely put out the fire by 1.10pm. 

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks engineers were called to Eastern Avenue, Ilford, London at about 12.20 pm on Saturday by the London Fire Brigade.

"A low voltage cable had developed a fault which interrupted power supplies to 69 properties.

"Fifty-six properties were restored by 6.50pm, with the remaining 13 being restored by 9.45pm.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience caused. Customer care staff also helped keep people updated.”
